To succeed, you need Emotional Intelligence

Have you noticed that the business world can be very hostile? Maybe you have a boss who does not like you. Or a customer who treats you like crap.
No matter what your place on the career ladder, I bet you've already felt misunderstood at some point. Every day people feel excluded, unwanted and ill-treated at work. And consequently, they suffer.
Let's face it: business is not always fun. After all, it's business.
But I believe we can easily improve this scenario with one ingredient: Emotional Intelligence.
Everyone has heard of it. But what is it, in fact? How can this capacity be improved? And how to use it to be a better professional.
Emotional intelligence is a term that was popularized by John Mayer of the University of New Hampshire and Peter Salovey of Yale.
Mayer describes IE (also called QE) as follows:
"Emotional intelligence, as we usually describe it, is the ability to rationalize emotions and emotional information, using them to improve thinking. People with high IE skills, we believe, can solve a wide range of emotions quickly and accurately. "
In today's economy, solving emotional problems is critical. At work, we deal with complex problems. And often we need to work as a team to find solutions.

Business success has nothing to do with high scores on ENEM, IQ tests, or any other similar metrics. It has to do with high-impact leadership.
And if you want to find meaning in achievements, you need to be able to work with others. From this perspective, Emotional Intelligence is the key to bring better results and success.
Research indicates that Emotional Intelligence is also related to greater mental health. Therefore, it is not only a skill that influences the results, but also influences your own happiness.

IE leads to self-knowledge, which leads to more happiness

Emotional Intelligence indicates a person's ability to identify emotions. Not just the emotions of other people, but also your own emotions. In fact, I believe you need to start by identifying your own emotions before you lead others. Therefore, IA is closely related to self-knowledge.
This is why IE is an important predictor of success in life and in business. It's like that:
  • Greater IE leads to greater self-knowledge.
  • Better self-knowledge leads to more happiness.
  • And more happiness leads to greater satisfaction with work.
  • Greater job satisfaction leads to better results.
  • Better results lead to more recognition.
  • Recognition for work makes us feel important.
  • Again, there is an improvement in happiness, results, etc.
Realize? Emotional Intelligence is important. After reading and talking a lot about it, I want to share how I improved my own IE in 3 steps.

1. Identify your emotions

Daniel Goleman, another IE pioneer and author of the book Emotional Intelligence: Why It's More Important Than IQ, argues that we have two minds. He claims:
"In a very real sense we have two minds: one that thinks and the other that feels."
To develop a mind that feels, I like to write about my emotions every day in my diary. If you do not have a diary, start writing one for the sake of your Emotional Intelligence . The first step is to identify how you feel and what triggers that emotion. Do not worry about why. Here are some questions you can ask yourself:
  • What do you feel in different situations?
  • Do you feel angry when you receive criticism?
  • Are you sad when people ignore you?
  • Do you freeze when it gets in the way?

2. Interpret your emotions

Once you have a better idea of how you react in different situations in life, it is time to understand the emotions. Consider the following:
  • When you get angry, how do you respond to people?
  • What do you think about this?
  • What are the situations in which you get upset, sad, happy, angry, etc?
  • Do not judge yourself by saying "I'm a fool". It's just an exercise in understanding your emotions, nothing more.

3. Manage Your Emotions

That's the main part to succeed in business. A leader does not follow the herd or energy of a group. A leader CONFIGURE the emotional climate of the environment. But before you can adjust the mood of a group, you need to adjust your own mood. Ask yourself:
  • Can you get out of a sad mood?
  • Can you cheer yourself up?
  • Can you slow down when you're very excited?
  • If you can not, work on it. You need to have control over your emotions to manage them.
I applied this three-step method to improve my ability to identify my own emotions.
What you will discover is this: when you can identify your own emotions, you can also improve in identifying the emotions of other people. And that's exactly what IE means.
It's a big cliche. We are all exactly the same, especially when you look beyond the emotional wall that most builds.
We experience sadness, joy, anger, guilt, fear, deception. But you need to recognize that.
Often we just go on with our lives without realizing that we have these emotions. If you live like this, you will never be a leader.
In this way, we will never develop self-consciousness. And therefore we can not enjoy the best of life.
A true leader knows the emotions of another person better than the person himself. But it all starts with knowing yourself first.
